Towing and Taxing

TOWING

Before  towing  the  aircraft,  the  parking  brake must be released and the rudder gust lock pin between the rudder pedals removed. The brake is released by pushing in the brake handle, under the left corner of the pilot sub-panel. The tow bar is connected to the towing lugs on the torque knee upper fitting of the nose strut. Severe steering linkage damage can result if the aircraft is towed with rudder locks installed. To prevent damage to the nose gear when using a tug, never exceed the turning limits marked on the nose gear strut. A stop fitting on the aft side of the nose gear was designed to protect the nose steering components during normal taxi operation; however, the stop fitting does not provide shear relief as a safety measure for the assembly if ground handling activities exceed turning limits.

TAXIING

The ground turning radius depends upon partial braking action, differential power, and the nose-wheel fully deflected in the direction of the turn. Locking the inside brake can cause tire or strut damage. When turning the aircraft, if the wingtip clears obstacles, the tail also clears. The minimum turning radius for the wingtip is 35 feet 6 inches. When taxiing, turning, and during engine start, the propeller and exhaust blast area directly aft of the engines can be hazardous to personnel and equipment. While the velocities and temperatures cannot be accurately measured, reasonable care should be taken to prevent problems. Vertical stabilizer clearance is 14 feet 3 inches.
